- Description: I’m not mad. I’m fine, actually. I just have a few questions.
- Author: brian grubb

Sabrina Carpenter won an Emmy over the weekend for her role as executive producer and host of The Muppet Show. This gets her halfway to an EGOT, with only the Oscar and Tony remaining, which is notable for a couple of reasons:

- The easiest way for her to get the Oscar would be doing a song attached to a movie, but it would be cooler if she shows up as a scene-stealer in like a Christopher Nolan movie (fun way to spend five minutes: picture her in Anne Hathaway's role in The Odyssey)
- If she were to get to the EGOT, she would be the second person to do it with a Muppet-related project in one of the categories, joining Rita Moreno, who won in 1977 for the Muppet Show appearance where she performed [a cover of the song Fever with Animal on the drums](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VoIZQh1IjI8&ref=type-click-type.ghost.io)

The Muppet Show actually won four Emmys over the weekend: Best Variety Special (Pre-Recorded), Best Writing for a Variety Special, Best Picture Editing for Variety Programming, and Best Production Design for a Variety Special. That’s kind of a lot of Emmys. It’s more Emmys than I have. It’s probably more Emmys than you have, unless someone reading this has five or more Emmys, which you should keep to yourself if you do because no one likes a showoff. It also raises a pretty good question, one I posed in the headline and will pose again here: Hey, why haven’t there been more new episodes of The Muppet Show?

I mean, look at this.

That special premiered on February 4th of this year as part of the Muppets' 50th anniversary celebration. It was funny and charming and had one of the world’s biggest pop stars as the host and Seth Rogen attached as a producer. It was cool. People seemed to like it. It felt like a layup to roll out a few more episodes, maybe not 22 every season, but at least five or six a year. And yet, since then… nothing.

Which is weird, right? Like… why? Why isn’t Disney making more episodes of The Muppet Show? Why aren’t there a dozen stars attached to upcoming episodes? Ryan Gosling, Tina Fey and/or Amy Poehler, Bad Bunny, Olivia Rodrigo, Paul Rudd, Daniel Craig, Cardi B. These are just names I came up with as I typed that sentence and they’d all be great. I would even settle for Disney being cynical about it and just using the show to promote in-house talent, within reason. Get Robert Downey Jr. in there to promote a Marvel movie or Pedro Pascal to get a little Mandalorian bump. Tom Holland and Zendaya. Florence Pugh. Do you see how easy this is? Let Florence Pugh stare at Gonzo with her intense eyes and then have him blast into space.

I’m getting mad now. Part of that is because I really like the Muppets. They have a kind of smirking-but-still-wholesome energy I really enjoy. I guess you could argue that they’re dated and don’t appeal to a younger generation, but that’s more of a You problem than a Muppet problem. I’m talking to you, Disney. Spider-Man has been around for decades, too. If you can keep making Spider-Man movies, you can figure out how to make the Muppets work in 2026.

I said that was part of why I was mad. The other part is that writing all of this out reminded me that the Muppets appeared in a season of Holey Moley — the extreme mini-golf show that ran for a few seasons on ABC — and it was lovely and stupid and everything I’ve ever wanted from a television show that airs when it is 95 degrees outside and that was 2022 and then there was just… nothing. Again. No cancellation and no renewal. Just… nothing… for the last four years and counting. It’s definitely not driving me crazy. Ha ha. Ha.

It all makes me think that maybe Disney has no idea what to do with the Muppets right now. Like maybe the Muppets are just a tiny cog in a big machine that cranks out Marvel movies and Pixar movies and runs theme parks and oversees ESPN and broadcasts Monday Night Football and OH MY GOD IMAGINE A MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL SIMULCAST ON ESPN2 HOSTED BY THE MUPPETS WITH KERMIT AND FOZZIE IN THE BOOTH AND STATLER AND WALDOLF IN A LUXURY BOX.

Sorry. Sorry. I got a little wound up there. It happens. But this is what I mean. Like, why hasn’t that happened yet? Why isn’t Miss Piggy a guest judge on Dancing With The Stars? Why isn’t she a contestant? Why isn’t Disney just inserting The Muppets into its many existing properties left and right? At some point, if you’re not gonna use them, why not just sell off the property to someone who will? A Coyote Vs. Acme situation but on a larger scale. It could work.

Or they could just announce a few more episodes of The Muppet Show. That would shut me up for a while, I bet. Chris Hemsworth is in the new Avengers movie. He’s funny. I bet he’d be great with the Muppets. Let him host an episode and have Miss Piggy try to climb him like a tree. These are all free ideas. My gift to you.
